In short: dandruff doesn't cause baldness, but a flaky, itchy, inflamed scalp can increase hair shedding, through inflammation and through scratching. The good news is that hair lost this way usually grows back once the scalp is under control. The fix is a proper anti-dandruff shampoo routine, not an "anti-hair-fall" shampoo.
How dandruff adds to hair fall
- Dandruff and its stronger form, seborrhoeic dermatitis, are driven by a scalp yeast (Malassezia) and oil.
- The result is inflammation, itching and scratching, which can push more hairs to shed and cause breakage.
- Dandruff is also common alongside pattern hair loss, so the two are often confused.
Will it grow back? If dandruff is the main cause, yes, usually. If thinning continues after the scalp is clear, look for another cause. → Cause finder

The routine that works
- Pick an active: ketoconazole 2%, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide or ciclopirox.
- Massage into the scalp; leave 3–5 minutes; rinse.
- Use it 2–3 times a week until clear (2–4 weeks), then once a week to keep it away.
- Rotate actives if one stops working.
- For thick scale, a salicylic acid shampoo helps lift it first.
Oiling and dandruff: careful
Malassezia feeds on certain oils. Leaving oil on the scalp for long periods can make dandruff worse for some people.
- If you have active dandruff, pause scalp oiling or keep it short (an hour before washing) and wash thoroughly.
- Oiling the lengths to reduce breakage is fine.
Other tips
- Wash regularly. Infrequent washing lets oil and yeast build up.
- Stress, sweat, cold dry weather and sweaty helmets can trigger flares.
- Don't scratch, which adds to breakage and inflammation.
- Hard water can leave residue that looks like flakes. → Hard water and hair fall
When to see a doctor
- No improvement after 4 weeks of a proper anti-dandruff routine
- Thick scales, red patches beyond the hairline, oozing or pain
- Hair loss in patches
See a doctor soon if you have: round bald patches that appear suddenly · hair coming out in clumps · redness, pain, pus, scaling or scarring on the scalp · hair loss with fever, weight loss, irregular periods, acne or new facial hair · eyebrow or eyelash loss · hair loss in a child.
