Best oils for hair fall and growth, honestly rated

In short: hair oiling is a valuable Indian tradition. It can make hair softer, shinier and less likely to break, and a scalp massage feels good. But no oil has good evidence for regrowing hair or stopping hair fall from the root: pattern baldness, shedding after illness, or deficiencies. Use oil for hair health and comfort; use proven treatment for hair loss.

What oiling can and can't do

Can help Can't fix
Reduce breakage and split ends Pattern baldness
Reduce protein loss during washing (especially coconut oil) Shedding after typhoid, dengue, delivery
Make hair softer and shinier Low iron, thyroid, PCOS
A relaxing scalp massage Alopecia areata

The oils, rated

Oil Good for Evidence for regrowth

About the claims: Indulekha ("clinically proven to grow new hair… 21,500 new hair in 120 days") and Parachute Advansed ("clinically proven to reduce hair fall in 30 days") make clinical claims, but their product pages gave no study details, which costs them labelling points in our score. Indulekha is marketed as an Ayurvedic medicine. A licence isn't the same as clinical-trial evidence.

How to read these: the scores are close because no oil has good evidence for regrowth. Coconut-based oils get a little more for breakage evidence; price and claim honesty decide the rest. Cheap coconut or amla oil does the main job (less breakage, softer hair) as well as expensive blends.

Where to buy

How to oil well

  1. Warm slightly; part your hair and apply to the lengths and ends, plus a little on the scalp.
  2. Massage gently for a few minutes. Don't rub hard, which causes breakage.
  3. Leave 30 minutes to a few hours, then wash it out with shampoo.
  4. Don't sleep with oil every night if you have dandruff; long oil contact can feed scalp yeast. → Dandruff and hair fall
  5. Using minoxidil? Oil a few hours before washing, and apply minoxidil to a clean, dry scalp afterwards.

FAQs

Which oil is best for hair growth and thickness? None has strong evidence for growth. Coconut oil is best supported for reducing breakage. For thinning, see minoxidil.

Indulekha or Kesh King: which is better? Both are Ayurvedic blends with limited clinical evidence. Compare the ingredients, price, and how your scalp tolerates them.

Does oiling cause hair fall? No, but heavy oiling with dandruff can worsen the scalp, and rough massaging causes breakage.
