The honest truth first: a shampoo touches your scalp for about a minute, then gets rinsed away. No shampoo can fix pattern baldness, low iron, thyroid problems or PCOS. A good shampoo can: treat dandruff (which can add to hair fall), cut breakage, and keep your scalp healthy while proven treatments do the heavy lifting.

First: what's your hair fall actually from?
| If your hair fall is… | A shampoo can… | What actually treats it |
|---|---|---|
| With dandruff or an itchy, flaky scalp | Help a lot (anti-dandruff actives) | Ketoconazole shampoo · Dandruff and hair fall |
| Breakage (short, snapped hairs) | Help (gentle cleansing + conditioner) | Hair damage and breakage |
| Pattern thinning (hairline, crown, parting) | Very little | Minoxidil · Men · Women |
| Sudden shedding after illness or delivery | Very little | Time and the cause → Telogen effluvium |
| Low iron, thyroid, PCOS | Nothing | Diagnose and treat the cause → Cause finder |
What "5x hair fall control" usually means
Many anti-hair-fall shampoos advertise numbers like "5X hair fall control", "reduces hair fall by 90%" or "up to 98%". When we checked the product pages of 9 popular shampoos in October 2026, only one stated how its number was measured: Himalaya says its "up to 96%" figure is based on lab tests against non-conditioning shampoo after 12 washes, for hair fall due to breakage. That's a measure of hair breaking, not hair falling from the root. The others gave no method, sample size or duration. Reducing breakage is useful, but it's a different problem from hair loss.
Ingredients that matter

| Zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, ciclopirox | Dandruff | Strong for dandruff |
| Salicylic acid | Flaking and scale build-up | Moderate for scale |
| Caffeine | Claimed to stimulate follicles | Early |
| Redensyl, procapil, other peptides | Claimed to reduce hair fall | Early (mostly manufacturer studies) → Redensyl · Procapil |
| Onion extract, rosemary, bhringraj, amla | Traditional / marketing claims | Very limited in shampoo form → Onion · Rosemary |
| Mild surfactants, conditioning agents | Less breakage and frizz | Good, for breakage |
| Chelating agents (EDTA) | Mineral build-up from hard water | Plausible → Hard water |

How to read these: no shampoo scores highly for hair loss, because no shampoo has strong evidence for it. Ketoconazole leads because treating dandruff is something a shampoo can actually do. Differences in the 46–58 range mostly reflect ingredient disclosure, fragrance, sulphates and price, not proven effect.

How to use a hair fall shampoo well
- Massage it into the scalp, not the lengths. Medicated shampoos need 3–5 minutes before rinsing.
- Condition the lengths to cut breakage.
- Wash as often as your scalp needs. Daily washing doesn't cause hair loss; the hairs you see were already shed.
- Give it 4–6 weeks before judging the effect on dandruff or breakage.
FAQs
Which shampoo is best for hair fall and hair growth? No shampoo has strong evidence for regrowing hair. For regrowth, look at minoxidil. Choose a shampoo for your scalp: anti-dandruff if flaky, gentle if dry.
Are sulphate-free shampoos better for hair fall? They can be gentler on dry or coloured hair and reduce breakage. They don't affect hair loss from the root.
Do I need a separate shampoo for men? No. Choose by scalp type, not gender.
