Iron deficiency and hair loss

Medical review pendingWritten by the HairLoss99 editorial team

In short: low iron is one of the most common, and most fixable, contributors to hair fall, especially in Indian women. The key test is serum ferritin (your iron stores), not just haemoglobin. If it's low, treating it under a doctor's guidance helps hair recover over 3–6 months or more. Don't take iron without testing: too much iron is harmful.

Why iron matters for hair

Hair follicles divide very fast, and they need iron. When iron stores run low, the body prioritises vital organs, and hair growth can slow or shed more. Low ferritin is linked to diffuse shedding and can worsen female pattern hair loss.

Iron deficiency is very common in India. In NFHS-5 (2019–21), more than half of women aged 15–49 were anaemic.

Symptoms

Tests to ask for

Test What it tells you
Serum ferritin Iron stores. Can be low even when haemoglobin is normal
CBC (haemoglobin, MCV) Whether you're anaemic
Iron studies (serum iron, TIBC, transferrin saturation) More detail if needed
CRP Ferritin rises with inflammation, so it can look falsely normal

What ferritin level is "enough" for hair? Lab reference ranges start quite low. Many dermatologists aim higher for hair recovery, but the exact target is debated. Ask your doctor what level they're aiming for.

Treatment

Iron-rich foods (Indian kitchen)

Vegetarian Non-vegetarian
Lentils and dals, rajma, chana, soya Red meat, liver (absorbed best)
Green leafy vegetables (palak, methi, amaranth) Chicken, fish, eggs
Seeds (pumpkin, sesame), nuts
Fortified cereals, poha
Diet helps prevent deficiency, but it's usually not enough to fix an established one. Most people need supplements.

How long until hair improves?

Shedding often slows 2–3 months after iron stores start to recover, with visible improvement over 6–12 months. If hair doesn't improve once ferritin is healthy, look for other causes. → Cause finder

FAQs

My haemoglobin is normal. Can low iron still cause hair loss? Yes. Ferritin (stores) can be low before haemoglobin falls. Ask for ferritin specifically.

Can I just take iron to be safe? No. Unnecessary iron can cause stomach problems and, over time, iron overload. Test first.

See a doctor soon if you have: round bald patches that appear suddenly · hair coming out in clumps · redness, pain, pus, scaling or scarring on the scalp · hair loss with fever, weight loss, irregular periods, acne or new facial hair · eyebrow or eyelash loss · hair loss in a child.
