Onion oil and onion juice for hair: does it work?

Medical review pendingWritten by the HairLoss99 editorial team

In short: the onion-for-hair idea traces back to one small study of fresh onion juice in alopecia areata, a patchy autoimmune condition. It wasn't a study of everyday hair fall or pattern baldness, and it was too small to be conclusive. Onion oils and shampoos sold in India are different products again. They usually contain onion extract in a mix of oils, and there's no good evidence they grow hair.

The study behind the hype

Details
Who Fewer than 40 people with patchy alopecia areata
What Crude onion juice applied twice daily vs tap water
Result More regrowth with onion juice after a few weeks
Limitations Very small; not well blinded (onion smells); alopecia areata often regrows on its own; not about pattern hair loss or general hair fall
