In short: biotin (vitamin B7) is needed for healthy hair, but true biotin deficiency is rare. In people who aren't deficient, there's no good evidence that biotin tablets or gummies grow hair or stop hair fall. High-dose biotin can also distort important blood tests, including thyroid and heart tests. For most people, biotin is money better spent elsewhere.
What the evidence says
- A review of published cases found that people who improved with biotin had an underlying problem: genetic biotin deficiency, a specific medical condition, or another cause of brittle hair or nails.
- No good-quality trial shows biotin regrows hair in people with normal levels, or helps pattern hair loss.
- Biotin is popular because deficiency causes hair loss, so it seems logical that more biotin means more hair. It doesn't work that way.
Who might actually be low
- Rare genetic conditions (biotinidase deficiency)
- Eating lots of raw egg whites regularly (they bind biotin)
- Long-term use of some anti-seizure medicines
- Pregnancy (levels can fall)
- Long-term tube feeding or some gut disorders If none of these apply, deficiency is unlikely.
How much is in Indian products?
| Typical amount | |
|---|---|
| Daily need (adults) | About 30–40 micrograms (mcg) |
| Typical biotin tablet or gummy | 5,000–10,000 mcg (5–10 mg), which is 100–300 times the daily need |
| "Biotin + folic acid" tablets | Varies; check the label |
| In October 2026, 10,000 mcg biotin tablets cost about ₹550–600 for 120 (Carbamide Forte, Himalayan Organics). Biotin gummies cost ₹499–849 a month and contain anything from 30 mcg (Be Bodywise) to 5,000 mcg (Man Matters) per gummy. Jan Aushadhi lists biotin 10 mg at an MRP of ₹34 per 10. |
Your body excretes the excess, but the excess is what interferes with lab tests.
⚠️ Biotin and blood tests
High-dose biotin can make some lab tests falsely high or falsely low, including:
- Thyroid tests (TSH, T3, T4), which can mimic thyroid disease
- Troponin, a heart attack test, which can be falsely low
- Some hormone tests Tell your doctor and the lab if you take biotin. Stopping it a few days before tests is commonly advised; ask your doctor how long.

- Check iron (ferritin), vitamin D and B12, which are far more commonly low in India. → Which deficiency causes hair fall?

Biotin-rich foods
Eggs (cooked), nuts and seeds, legumes, sweet potato, mushrooms, whole grains. A normal diet provides enough for most people.
FAQs
Is biotin harmful? It's not toxic at usual supplement doses, but the lab-test interference is a real risk.
Will biotin help my nails? Some small studies suggest it may help brittle nails. Evidence for hair is weaker.
Should I take biotin after delivery? Post-delivery shedding usually settles on its own. Iron and overall nutrition matter more. → Hair fall after delivery
