2-deoxy-D-ribose (2dDR) hydrogel

DraftReviewed by the HairLoss99 editorial team · checked 17 Oct 2026

A preclinical paper (PMC11180715) showed 2dDR hydrogel stimulated hair regrowth in a mouse AGA model at 80-90% of the effect of minoxidil; a human trial, 'Topical 2-Deoxy-D-ribose Hydrogel Versus Minoxidil 5% Solution for Androgenetic Alopecia' (NCT07502976), has since been registered on ClinicalTrials.gov.

How it works

A naturally occurring sugar formulated into a topical alginate hydrogel; proposed to upregulate VEGF (a blood-vessel-growth signal) in scalp skin to stimulate hair follicles, similar in concept to how minoxidil and PRP are thought to work.

Developer
Academic research group (mechanism paper); a human trial (NCT07502976) has since been registered
Stage
Preclinical (mouse model) with a human trial now registered on ClinicalTrials.gov
Evidence so far
Peer-reviewed data

Results so far

Mouse model: increased hair follicle density, anagen:telogen ratio, follicle diameter, and vascularization, with effects described as comparable (80-90%) to minoxidil — this is animal data only, no human efficacy data yet.

What's next

Human trial (NCT07502976) appears newly registered; no results or completion date were verified in this research pass.

In India

No India-specific development identified.

What to do today: treatments in development aren't a reason to wait. Ask a dermatologist about the options that work now, such as minoxidil and, for men, finasteride.
