Low-dose oral minoxidil (LDOM)

DraftReviewed by the HairLoss99 editorial team · checked 17 Oct 2026

A Phase 3 trial (NCT07529977) evaluating oral minoxidil (N1087) vs placebo in men with AGA was posted to ClinicalTrials.gov in April 2026. Separately, a 2026 patient survey found unwanted hair growth (hypertrichosis) in 71.6% of women on LDOM.

How it works

Oral vasodilator (repurposed blood-pressure drug) taken at low doses to stimulate hair growth, thought to work via vasodilation and prolonging the anagen phase.

Developer
Off-label generic use; no single commercial sponsor. A Phase 3 trial of an oral minoxidil product (N1087) in men was registered in 2026.
Stage
Widely used off-label; formal Phase 3 trial (N1087) newly registered

Results so far

Reported adverse-effect rates: dose-dependent hypertrichosis ~24%, transient shedding 16-22%, mild peripheral edema ~2%; serious complications (e.g., pericardial effusion) rare at alopecia doses. International Delphi consensus dosing: 1.25 mg/day starting dose for women, 2.5 mg/day for men.

What's next

No approval pathway exists yet for a branded low-dose oral minoxidil product for hair loss; use remains off-label pending outcome of trials like N1087.

In India

No India-specific trial identified; oral minoxidil is already widely prescribed off-label in India as elsewhere, but this was not independently confirmed with an Indian source.

What to do today: treatments in development aren't a reason to wait. Ask a dermatologist about the options that work now, such as minoxidil and, for men, finasteride.
