Minoxidil results: what to expect, month by month

Medical review pendingWritten by the HairLoss99 editorial team

The most common reason people "fail" on minoxidil is quitting too early. Here's a realistic timeline and how to tell whether it's working.

Month-by-month timeline

When What you may see What to do
Weeks 0–2 Nothing yet Take baseline photos (see below).
Weeks 2–8 Shedding may increase. Weak hairs fall to make room for new growth. Don't stop. It usually settles. If it's very heavy or lasts more than about 2–3 months, see a doctor.
Months 2–4 Shedding reduces; fine, light "baby hairs" may appear Keep applying consistently.
Months 4–6 Thinning areas may look denser in photos Compare photos at month 6.
Months 6–12 Hairs thicken and darken; peak results for most people Decide with your doctor whether to continue, add or switch treatment.
After 12 months Results usually hold while you keep using it Long-term use maintains the effect.

How much regrowth is realistic?

Track it properly: photos, not the mirror

Hair changes too slowly to notice day to day. Do this once a month:

  1. Same place, same light (for example, bathroom light at night), same distance.
  2. Dry, unstyled hair, parted the same way.
  3. Four angles: front hairline, top (looking down), crown (have someone take it), and your parting (women).
  4. Save them in one folder by date. Compare month 0 vs month 6, not week to week.

Not working after 6 months? Check these first

  1. Are you using it correctly? Twice daily (5% solution), on a dry scalp, left for 4+ hours, applied to the scalp rather than the hair.
  2. Are you consistent? Skipping many days reduces the effect.
  3. Is it the right diagnosis? If your loss is from low iron, thyroid, PCOS or alopecia areata, minoxidil alone won't be enough. → Cause finder
  4. Is the product genuine and the stated strength? Buy from licensed pharmacies.
  5. You might be a low responder. Some people respond poorly to topical minoxidil. A dermatologist may suggest adding finasteride (men), anti-androgens (women), microneedling or oral minoxidil.

Before-and-after photos: read them carefully

Brand photos are often taken with different lighting, wet versus dry hair, or styling. Look for the same lighting, angle, parting and hair length, plus a stated time on treatment. We only publish before/after photos with written consent and a stated treatment period.

See a doctor soon if you have: round bald patches that appear suddenly · hair coming out in clumps · redness, pain, pus, scaling or scarring on the scalp · hair loss with fever, weight loss, irregular periods, acne or new facial hair · eyebrow or eyelash loss · hair loss in a child.
