In short: hair loss that starts in your late teens or 20s is common, and it can feel crushing. The upside is that early is the best time to act: treatments work best on hair that's thinning but not yet gone. Rule out simple causes, get a proper diagnosis, and avoid wasting money on products that don't work.
This page is written mainly for young men. Young women: see hair loss in women, where thinning in your 20s is often linked to PCOS, iron or shedding after illness or stress.
Step 1: Is it actually hair loss?
- Some hairline change between 17 and 30 is normal. → Mature vs balding hairline
- Losing 50–100 hairs a day is normal, and more on wash days.
- Bathroom lighting and phone flash make everyone's scalp look thin.
- Sudden shedding after an illness, exams, a crash diet or a big stress is often temporary. → Telogen effluvium
Step 2: Track it properly
Take photos once a month: front, temples, top and crown, dry hair, same light. Compare month 0 with month 3 and month 6. → Stage checker
Step 3: Rule out the simple stuff
- Dandruff or an itchy scalp → Dandruff and hair fall
- Crash diets, very low protein, sudden weight loss
- Iron, vitamin D, B12 (especially if vegetarian) → Deficiencies
- Anabolic steroids or testosterone boosters can speed up pattern hair loss in men who are prone to it.
- Tight hats or helmets don't cause balding, but rough habits and heat can cause breakage. → Hair damage
Step 4: See a dermatologist if
- Your hairline keeps moving or your crown keeps thinning over 3–6 months of photos
- Your dad, uncles or brothers went bald early
- You have bald patches, scalp pain or sudden heavy shedding
If it's male pattern baldness
Early-onset pattern baldness tends to progress faster if untreated. The main options are the same as at any age: minoxidil, finasteride, or both. → Minoxidil vs finasteride
Questions young men often have about finasteride (discuss with your doctor):
- Sexual side effects: uncommon, but real for some. → What the research says
- Mood: tell your doctor about any history of anxiety or depression.
- Future children: finasteride can affect semen in some men. Plan ahead if you're trying for a baby.
- Topical finasteride may suit men worried about side effects.
It's a long game: these treatments work only while you use them. Think about what you can afford for years, not months. Generic medicines cost far less than kits. → Minoxidil prices
Avoid
- "Guaranteed regrowth" oils, serums and kits with no published evidence
- Buying finasteride or oral minoxidil online without a prescription
- Very early hair transplants: hair loss in your 20s is still progressing, and an early transplant can look unnatural later. Most surgeons prefer to wait and stabilise with medicines first.
- Stacking 6 products at once, so you can't tell what works
It's OK to feel bad about it
Early hair loss affects confidence, dating and mental health. That's real, and it's common. If it's affecting your mood or daily life, talk to someone: a friend, a doctor, or Tele-MANAS on 14416. Some men choose treatment; others choose a short cut or a shaved head and never look back. Both are valid.
See a doctor soon if you have: round bald patches that appear suddenly · hair coming out in clumps · redness, pain, pus, scaling or scarring on the scalp · hair loss with fever, weight loss, irregular periods, acne or new facial hair · eyebrow or eyelash loss · hair loss in a child.
